Getting more traffic to your website has always been a major stress point for online business owners. It doesn’t matter how fancy or well-thought-out your website is; if no one visits, it’s all pretty much worthless. Sure you can rely on SEO tricks to bring visitors to your site, but the deck is stacked against you if you rely on search engines for all your traffic.
Instead of focusing on gaming the search engines, there are much better ways of getting quality traffic to your site. Here are a few of them:
Share your expertise
The whole point of having a website is to share your expertise and let people know how you can help them. But… contrary to popular opinion you do NOT have to share all your expert content on your own site. You can use other places to strategically post content that leads new prospects back to your site. Some ways to do this are:
- By writing and publishing Kindle books and print books
- By sharing information and know-how on teaching sites such as Udemy.com
- By creating how-to videos and posting them on YouTube, Vimeo and other video sharing sites
- By creating slide shows and posting them on sites such as SlideShare.com
All of these are ways to post pieces of content that you can then use to lead people back to your website for more detailed information , to sign up for your newsletter or to book an appointment or buy one of your products.
Publish, publish, publish
Once you have people coming to your site, relevant and timely content will get them coming back again and again. It’s no secret that when it comes to online success content is king. The more fresh content there is on your site when someone shows up, the more likely they are to come back again.
But again, you don’t have to limit yourself to publishing just on your blog. The majority of your content should be on the digital property you control but you can strategically post to other sites as well. Sharing pieces of your content on article sites, social media profiles, and guest blogs can expose you to new audiences that might not find you otherwise.
Improve your On-Page SEO
I know I said I’m not a fan of SEO games, but there are a few basic things you can do to give yourself a fighting chance of being seen in the search engine results. Following the instructions provided by Google’s Webmaster Tools will give you an advantage over the many website owners who either don’t know about or don’t care about SEO.
No matter what you think of social media, in today’s world you need to have a presence there. And I don’t mean just loading up Hootsuite or Buffer with “buy my stuff” messages. You need to get involved, start conversations and build relationships to really give your message a chance at being heard.
Go even one step further and participate in groups and communities as well as on your streams and you will find people naturally wanting to check out your website and get to know you better.
When it comes right down to it, the best way to get more traffic to your website is to give your audience a reason to go there. Using a combination of timely and relevant content, a little SEO, and participating in social media, groups, and communities will go a long way to giving your audience reasons to want to know more and ultimately end up on your site.
